The Young Carers Revolution crew present their campaign to Dr Maggie Atkinson, Children's Commissioner for England. In her speech following the screening Maggie Atkinson praised the young people and stated that she would use her power and influence to make sure the right people in Government would see the film.

Following the presentation of their film and poetry, the members of the Revolution receive a standing ovation from the audience, including; The Childrens Commissioner for England, The Head of Children's Services and the Deputy Directors and The Elected Member for Children & Young People amongst others.

Preparing to present and introduce their film to the conference audience the YCR crew focus on the lines they created.

After a year of hard work, commitment and dedication the Young Carers Revolution film, 'The Unusual Suspects' launches at the No Wrong Doors Conference in York.

Red Carpet Premiere!

The Young Carers Revoultion Campaign held its film premiere in style with a red carpet event at York St John University!

The YCR Crew invited their friends and families to see the results of all their hard work. Stakeholders, Carers Centre staff and Members of the Inspired Youth Community were also present to see the show.

It was an emotional evening and an honour to be a part of. The group all received their Vinspired Certificates from James Wainwright from North Yorkshire Youth, standing in for the York Team.

After the show, our guests were invited to write comments on a roll of paper. Here is what they said:

Eyes and Ears of the nation!

The 3rd post production session saw the YCR crew meet at 41 Monkgate to review the publicity and coverage that the campaign has generated.

It was a great chance for the group to think back to the first aims for the project and to see how well they felt we had achieved those aims so far.

They looked at the different target audiences for their material and imagined how each would receive and respond to the campaign media.

We welcomed two special guests to the group to help us with the discussion.
Sarah Fitsell works at York Carers Centre in charge of marketing and Frances Perry is Carers Strategy Manager at City of York Council.

The group also looked at the forthcoming publicity and looked at readership, circulation and viewing figures for each.

DVD Resource Pack

As we draw ever closer to the campaign launch events, the DVD resource pack is taking shape! Here is the front cover designed by Jim Cereal using Aidan's canvas as inspiration. The film will be mastered and signed off today before being delivered to the Duplication centre.

Post Production Sessions

During our two Post Production sessions with the YCR Crew the focus has been on 4 main elements...

1 - Understanding and using some basic editing skills using Final Cut Pro software

2 - Discussing and planning the 'No Wrong Doors' Conference Workshops

3 - Wrapping up final production jobs and making decisions on the YCR Resource Pack

4 - Evaluating the Process so far...

With the project Evaluation and completed last week, this week's session moved forward in two directions with one half of the group working on planning the conference workshops and the other half working with Kev on the edit.

To kick off proceedings Kev gave the group an insight into the process of preparing footage for the edit. He also sneaked together a quick fun cut with some outtakes from Sharron's interview and some funny cuts shot on the i-sight camera.

Once the laughing had died down the group got down to the two tasks in hand.

Kev explained and demonstrated some basic sequencing, transitions, colour correction and editing techniques, giving the crew a chance to get their hands on the edit with Final Cut Pro. It was an opportunity to shape some of the creative segments of the film using recordings of the poems and key moments along side pictures and video. It was a live edit so everybody could see the work in progress projected onto the big screen.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group worked on ideas for the workshop using a structure based on Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). They worked on the basis that their best tool for discussion is their creative work and that they could speak freely from experience around the issues. The question is, what did they want people to take from their workshop?

During the session the group also viewed Ciara Leeming's latest Multimedia piece which will accompany the YCR Film. It was a really great piece which really captured the character, sensitivity and fun of the project. We are looking forward to hearing from Ciara if she manages to get the piece placed with some media interest!

During this project the YCR crew between them will have racked up over 1000 hours of volunteering. An amazing and mind blowing feat! Thanks to the Vinvolved Team at York CVS the crew are now registered for Vinspired awards to recognise their work and we hope these will be presented at the conference.

the evaluatoin exercise last week went well and was really good, the porject has turned out better than i expected and loved how it has worked.

i have gained loads of experiance like camera, sound and acting. i have enjoied learning from (= cj and kev =) two very talented people.

ciara's multimedia peice is rea,.. REALLY GOOD, got to the points well.
the editing was really cool and fun to watch the outaky bits big LOLIGANZ all-around.

Well. the project has been really good and we've had some amazing opportunities to work with some amazing people.

We've gained masses of confidence and multimedia skills throughout the development of the campaign.
We've got closer as a group of young people and are better friends because of it. We now have more people to talk to when things go wrong.
We've learnt that it's better to talk about things instead of bottling them up as there are people who can help.

The Vinspired and V50 awards are based on the volunteering we've done throughout the campaign. We've added up all the hours we've spent on the project and we've got some impressive totals.

We've watched Ciara's multimedia peice on the revolution which was amazing. It showed the difficulties of young carers along with the fun side of being close friends. we're really grateful for the opportunity to work with her.

The conference planning has been quite difficult as eveyone has loads of ideas. We've worked through how we want to present our campaign and what's going to happen at the conference.

We can't wait :)

Shoot Day 5 - The Finale!

It’s a wrap!

The final day on the shoot began with a pick-up schedule where we captured any missing pieces of the film, including an interview with Young Carers worker Liz and the final Key Moments shoot and recordings with Ciara Leeming.

Once the Pizzas had been dealt with the group then settled to review the Key Moments for the film and listened to some of the audio tracks which Dan Spleen had been capturing during the week. The poetry in particular was very powerful and the quality of the recording made the words seem even more striking.

Finally the group headed out on location once more to get the final shots to finish the film.

The Caring lifecycle was shot with the YCR crew chilling and reflecting on the grass.

Then a final shot was set up with each person holding up a sheet of paper with a number to represent the amount of years they have had their caring responsibility.

With the filming now complete we look forward to the post production stage. Once the footage has been cut and prepared it will be presented back to the group in order to make editorial decisions whilst learning some basic editing skills.

Its difficult to put into words the admiration and pride we feel for the young people who are driving Young Carers Revolution forward. Their commitment and enthusiasm at every stage of the project has been an inspiration to see and has transferred directly into the quality of creative outputs we have seen from the campaign so far.

Well done! You are and will be the Young Carers Revolution!

As well as helping the production by capturing some of the Key Moments poses Ciara was also keen to spend some time with the older members of the group to find out some more about their thoughts around the issues. The rock-plex is a really odd name for the place we are currently using as our base, Which is right next to the rock church, at the priory street center. The Filming had been going on all week, and i was here yesterday, and again today to take part in the most important sections of the project. Seeing the photo's from the progression of the campaign on the blog, gives me massive confidence in the skills everyone involved. The experiences of the carers taking part, and dedicating their spare time are very important to making this s success. Just as important is the professional skills and experience of the leaders who have kept us focused yet upbeat. We have pulled together and pushed hard to get everything done, and each person deserves to give themselves a round of applause in my opinion! Saying that, it's not quite all there yet, we have the editing to come and then the hard slog of getting it out there to the people who will make a difference to us young carers. We have the film, we have the posters, but do we have the influence? It'll be interesting to see if we can make a genuine difference to how young carers are both perceived and treated. But i know this week's work will be worth it, because we have made an effort and got the ingredients for a brilliant 10 minute short.

Hey all,
Well it's the final day of filming, and everyone is sad, no-one needs to say it but its just one of those unspoken things that gets picked up. I've really enjoyed the past 2 weeks and I learnt how to make a professional film, well the making of it anyway.

Things have been getting too much emotionally but it really helps when you have friends to talk to about the things your worrying about. And of course the HUG SQUAD inevitably made an experience as once again the production caused a flood of tears along the way lol we're all ok though!

The most challanging part of the shoot was definately the emotion the production has generated. Its hard to see your friends upset, and at the same time try to ignore the fears that are upsetting you. But some times you just need a good cry to get it all out.

My favourite parts of the shoots are all the outtakes which are going on the memories DVD. Its amazing what happens when people don't realise that the camera is switched on. The one liners are amazing.

I think the final film will be better than anything I have ever imagined and I'm so looking forward to the finished result after Kev has waved his magic wand. :) I'm hoping the film will help to identify all the hidden young carers and abolish the stereotype of the sob story, afterall we are first and foremost young people.

This week has been a bit of an emotional rollercoster. There have been a lot of ups and a few downs. We've done a lot of repetitive filming to make sure we get all our information across.

The difficult parts of the week have been watching everybody cry and be upset. It's hard seeing close friends down. The hug squad were out in full force which really helped.

The best part of the week has been interviewing the young carers and the staff. It was interesting to find out what people really think and feel.

We've learnt how to use sound and camera equipment which is quite interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final product and seeing how Kev and Cj will present the ideas. I'm hoping that the film will have a huge impact on the people at the conference as well as the general public and hidden young carers. I hope that it will raise awareness of what being a young carer actually means.

its the final day of the shoot and its been really busy this week. we started with recording the key moments and poems. i found it a bit challenging because my voice is quiet and was quite emotional because of the nature of the issues we discussed. the best part was when we had a bit of free time and i recorded some singing. it was fun although i was a bit nervous. the production skills i have picked up has been how to use a camera properly and how to cope under pressure when being interviewed. i think the final film will be amazing because everyone has worked really have and we've done loads. i think the film will have a large impact and make people more aware of what a young carer is and will give them a more personal insight into the life of a young carer and hopefully make them understand that a young carer is a person and not just a label.

The best thing that has happened over the time period is that i got to meet people every day nearly that i don't get to see that often. Shoot Day 4 - YCR with IY, Dan Spleen & Ciara Leeming

For the fourth day of production the YCR crew were joined by experienced Photojournalist Ciara Leeming. Ciara has written for national newspapers and publications including The Guardian and Big Issue and has covered stories on subjects across the world.

Ciara was on set to lend her creative talents to capture the Key Moments freezes and also to learn more about the crew and their stories.

The day progressed well and amazingly we are on schedule to finish the work on time! Just enough time to get a hard earned lunch before continuing with the shoot.

Oh yeah, and you guessed it, we also had some laughs along the way!

Hey all, long time no speak. Its been a very busy week , but we have got a lot done. Its been emotional again today. We have taken some good films and pictures.

I nearly fell down a hill today, it was entertaining, but we got some good shots for my key moments.

Well tomorrow is the last day for shooting, it might be a bit sad, but I think we will all be really happy with what we have done here. Hopefully people will get our message and feel our emotions. I hope it will get people thinking, and make them do something about it.

We did the tracking shots for our poems so once again. I had to make Amie cry which she was extremely reluctant to do so Aidan held her whilst I put water on her eyes to make it look like she was crying. Its always fun, but its good to see the campaign going somewhere :)

Yesterday we worked on the tracking shots for the poems.
We worked really hard all day and were rewarded with yucky pot noodles again. We looked at different ways to set up a shot, using different lights and techniques.

Using the track and dolly was difficult as i wasn't really paying attention to it so almost fell off a few times.

Shoot Day 3 - YCR Crew

The crew set about creating a giant caring lifecycle using their own experiences as inspiration. They rolled out a huge sheet of photographer's paper courtesy of Jim Poyner. The lifecycle will be used in the final film.

The rest of the day was spent shooting a series of scenarios to go along with the poems recorded with Dan Spleen. The scenarios were set up in a long hall way courtesy of the Rock Church. The crew got to grips with the track and dolly and used the handbasher and an LED spotlight to isolate the subject in the darkness of the room.

The day was tiring and emotionally difficult. As always the hug squad was on hand to keep people cool.

It was an early start as IY headed over to ProVision in Leeds to pick up some professional production gear, including a Hand-Basher light kit and a Focus Track and Dolly. Mark at ProVision had the gear shipped over from Manchester specially for the YCR crew in order to fit the tight shoot schedule. Thanks Mark!

Shoot Day 2 - IY, Dan Spleen & The YCR Massive!

Today saw the YCR crew bash through another hectic shoot schedule!
The final interviews are now complete. The crew then set about getting a service perspective by interviewing Senior Young Carers worker Sharron and former Young Carers worker and YCR Volunteer Alex. Throughout the day Dan Spleen worked with small groups to capture their 'I am' statements, Poems and Key Moment narratives. Dan set up the equipment with help from the the crew and captured their delivery using Logic sound programme on a Mac laptop using a studio mic and Pop-shield.

There was also another list of important production jobs to complete such as typing up narratives and organising venues.

Finally the crew headed out to a pre-arranged taster session for the Upfaders Modern Music skills session run by Dan Axon. The idea was to capture some footage to represent the positive and recreational activities that the Carers Centre encourage and provide. The taster was being held at the LAFFS group for 12-15 year old carers. This will play an important part in balancing the final film.

Despite amazingly keeping to a packed hectic schedule the crew still found time for some antics... well it just wouldn't be the same without!

Hey all,
Well today has shown a lot of improvement in the movement, I’ve recorded my poem, I AM statement and key event. The hardest part was recording the key event as Daniel told me to imagine that I was back in that particular situation and that was really hard as I didn’t want to remember how I felt at that time.
Either way I still managed to portray it with enough emotion in order for the audience to understand how I felt at this point. And For that I was happy.
We also attended a LAFFS group which was interesting for me since I haven’t been to one for a while. To some it up I would describe it as hectic, loud and hyper ☺

Today I did my interview it took around 1hour because I couldn’t stop laughing. CJ bought some HORRIBLE pot noodles which nobody liked, maybe next time he will buy something edible. I think the interview went well apart from the laughing and birds, the most important thing I talked about was the lack of understanding that young carers face. I hope when people hear my interview it will make them realise what it’s really like to be a young carer and raise awareness about hidden young carers.

hello i am Fred. and i am a worm i live in the garden @ rock church and they are editing my house by cleaning it and putting pebbles in place. i am 12 years old and i have just started to come to young carers.

i was in a compost bag in BnQ. when the nice people from rock church bought the bag. and broght it to where i live now. there was lots of prittie flowers in the garden. some big and some small.

Black Hole

I was 10 years old my mum was dyignosed with cancer.
I was locked in stare.
My emotions are all over creating a picture in my head.
I feel a black hole in my heart.
I see distruction , I'm cold .
I can't move who knows if my mum will make it.
I'm being sucked into the black hole..... or it's me.
I'm the black hole... now I see black and feel numb.

Shoot Day 1 - IY, Dan Spleen and the YCR Crew

The YCR Shoot is under way! For the first day we focussed our efforts on capturing interviews. In turn the crew found locations, framed up the shot and proceded to work through the questions they had designed during the previous session.

But as with any production, it wasn't all just about camera equipment. The crew had to make phone calls, arrange shoot locations and logistics and type up narratives for the following week.

As the rest of the group were filming, other members were taking time to write BLOG entries and generally keeping the group's spirits high!

AND OF COURSE... IT WOULDN'T BE YOUNG CARERS REVOLUTION WITHOUT LOADS OF LAUGHS ALONG THE WAY!!!

Today we are in Rowntrees park, we are currently filming some interviews for our 10 minute film. We are filming in different locations for each person to make it more personal in the interviews. Filming is slightly frustrating as we need to find somewhere isolated and quiet. The lighting is good, however there is a lot of background noise from the surroundings, geese, children and such, are all creating an unwanted hiss. The day has been lovely, as we are in high spirits hoping to find the perfect place dsdewvgrbgr5b for everyone yet to do their interview. The equipment is being manned by the young carers, such as the boom mic, which is key to capturing the audio. We are sure the finished pieces will all be of a high caliber, emotional and concise, and Emily and Seb can’t wait to see them. Lastly the weather is brilliant today, perhaps this is the indication that spring has finally sprung!

Today is the start of a good day we have just decided where to do our interviews. We did it at the park near the cares center and then had some lunch. We then went to Rowntrees park and did some more interviews well some of us did some interviews and some of us just sat on a bench and played EYE SPY like 5 year old's.

Today has been has a really good day and i cant wait till Monday its going to be great

Session 9 - Pre-Production @ City Screen Basement

Session Aims:

Learn Crew Roles and Responsibilities for a Film Production

The Group were asked to respond to the statement. The Red marks show how they felt at the beginning of the session and the Black marks show how they felt at the end.

Today was perhaps the most important session of the campaign so far. The YCR crew were tasked with nailing down, not only the creative side of the film production but also the logistics of how we could capture the ideas.

Following the previous day's session Inspired Youth with the help of Stephen Burke drew together all the creative ideas from the previous eight campaign sessions which could fit into scope of the production. They came up with 6 elements with which the YCR Crew were to finalise, shape and craft into the film concept.

Each element was addressed in turn with the group focussing on how the elements could deliver the key messages to their desired audiences. The creative ideas were finalised and the logistic of the shoot proposed.

It was hard work! But worth every minute. The crew signed up to the schedule to show their availability and the shoot is to be shaped around these considerations.

In addition to the schedule crunching, the crew also got to grips with the equipment they will be using for the shoot. Award Winning Film Director Kevin Curran introduced the group to the tools of the trade and they all had a go at using the equipment in a mock interview set-up, in preparation for tomorrow's shoot. Well yesterday we looked for locations for our poems. I was late getting there but we all had fun doing it. We did alot of activites, and organised a few things for today.

I made Seb dress up as a wolf in a nightie. It made everyone laugh. He looked FIT!

We got some really good shots for the film. lalalala

When hiding behind the strong me. I feel sad, sick and fed up. I feel like this
because i have a peace of my heart that is broken. That peace of me is my dad who died from cancer.
Although my friends say that he is with me like a body as warm as a boiler.
I feel like he has gone, one of the reasons i feel like this is because i used to get bullied because i didnt have a dad. And my mum has a mental illness like a dream that you carnt see because it isnt a phisical illness .
All i want is to have that peace of me back. But i no that i wont get that but what i do have is young cares sone one who to talk to. Instead of people judeing me and thinking that i am a bad person. " WHEN I AM NOT "

Today we met Steven a theatre director, he helped us to explore different emotions using games and using the raw emotion that we had for particular objects mine was my blanket that I have had since I was small.

After playing that games we explored how we can display different things using a still life picture fir this we used the poems we wrote in the workshop with Dani.

To capture the poem I wrote we found a place on the strret (some steps) in which Amie sat with mascara rolling down her face this was because she had been crying.

My poem:

Tears rolling down the girls face
Ebony mascara smudges rivaling the dark night sky
Her day may be over but the next is due to start
The never ending story.

This is her life, the vicious circle she faces
Responsibility overwhelmes her and it never changes
Her routine is repetitive, she knows no different
But this is life as she knows it, its who she is

Her mother is unable, the guilt is unbearable
The pittiful looks the belittling
The lack of awareness

You don't know the real things, the real me
But she knows this will never change
Afterall this is what society is!

Yesterday we worked with Steven who is a theatre director.
We spent the day working on different techniques that will enable us to present our ideas in a visual way.
We played silly games and did silly activities to build our confidence and to start using our imaginations.

We had to bring an object that was personal to us and talk about it to the group for a minimum of 30seconds. My object was my christening bracelet which was also my mums. It was quite emotional but not as emotional as they day before.

Working with Steven was a great experiance which i am glad we had the opportunity for.

Session 8 - Performance Concepts with Stephen Burke at 41 Monkgate Studio Theatre

Offer and share stories
Learn and practice performance skills
Develop performance confidence

"I can develop a performance concept for use in the film production"

The group were asked to respond to the statement, the Green marks show how the group felt at the start of the session and the Brown marks show how they felt at the end.

For this session the group were joined by experienced and respected Theatre Director and Performance Artist Stephen Burke.

Stephen's session was all about taking the creative elements of the poetry session and other creative elements from the campaign so far and giving the group the chance to use a theatre space to bring movement and life to the images in preparation for the film production.

Stephen began with a number of warm-up activities which were designed to encourage the group to use space and movement. Time was also dedicated to the idea of narratives and stories and how a story can be owned and respectfully 'borrowed' or taken by someone else to create a different feel. These exercises illustrated the depth of personal stories and how they can be used to strike an audience with the key messages of the campaign.

Stephen then led the group through an activity where they would consider location, delivery and audience experience by presenting the poetry from Dani's session in places outside the theatre setting. Each group set up their scene and led the rest of the crew to discover the scene approaching it on foot whilst another group member read out the poem. The results helped to shape the crew's understanding of how scenes could impact on the viewer's experience.

Finally the group worked with Stephen to present another of their ideas from a previous session. The idea is all about how numbers represent each of them and their experiences. To find out more about their idea you'll have to watch the final film...!

The group worked hard all day and have now got a good head of steam going into the final session before production begins. Of course amongst all the high quality work and artistic commitment, it wouldn't be Young Carers Revolution if there wasn't loads of fun to be had along the way...

Session 7 - Creative Writing with Daniela Nunnari

Session Aims:

Create a 'Caring Timeline'
Learn and Practice Creative Writing Techniques
Create and Present a Final Piece of Poetry

"I can write and present a creative narrative which represents my thoughts, feelings and experiences"

The group were asked to respond to the statement, the Red marks show where they felt they were at the start of the session and the Green shows how they felt at the end.

Today's session was the first part of the second half of the campaign. We are now looking at creating moving media rather than static media. A definite shift in perspective takes place here; whereas before the crew were looking specifically how to project images outwards into the world, they now begin to look inwards in order to identify appropriate material for the film based on their own experiences. We knew that these sessions would be challenging for the crew and therefore set up a group check-in and check-out where people could express their thoughts and emotions and leave things in the room with the support of the group. We will do the check-in and check-out at each session from now on.

The first task was to create a visual timeline of their caring responsibility; from the moment they took on the responsibility to the present day and into the future. We asked the group to draw their timeline and include significant moments both positive and negative. The process of seeing all this written down was very challenging for all of us but became a good source of context and a pallette from which the crew could make positive choices about which experiences they wanted to share artistically as part of the campaign and which they wished to keep within the group.

Dani then began her session by doing some fun Haiku's to get the group used to writing creatively. The next exercise Dani did followed a structure working with metaphor and using metaphor to shape the poems. The results were really great and although fun, maintained a depth and quality about them. Finally Dani removed the structures and asked the group to write freely about something which was important to them from their timeline. Dani helped the group to craft their poems and narratives to really draw the audience into the feeling of the poems. The results were very vivid and again brought about lots of emotion which was shared with the group.

For the final presentation of the poems, Stephen Burke joined the group in order to see what material they would be bringing into the performing arts session the following day.

Yesterday's session was very productive because of the creative writing prices that we produced. I really enjoy writing as a hobby so I found it easy and produced good work. I hope that through the poetry the message can get across. It was fun working with Dani, she is really clever.

I have had experience with film and media and hope to do a lot of interesting things!

Well today was well Erm wet, there were a lot of tears from everyone today, and even if you didn’t cry it definitely got you thinking about the roles in which we play.

Everyone was so open today and it let each of us more aware of the difficulties that we face, after all our experiences are unique to us all so no story was the same. This produced a lot of tears and I had the pleasure of wearing 3 different shades of mascara for the rest of the day.

Although its been a tough day I think its brought us closer together as a group and this I know is going to prove a strength in the development of the group.

Well, today was very emotional. We started out by drawing out a timeline of our lives and the events that we feel are an important part of our lives.

We shared the timelines to the group; which was very emotional and resulted in a lot of smudged make up.

After a breather to sort ourselves out we sat down to start the poetry. We started out writing a haiku; which was really funny. After this we moved on to describing ourselves; which was quite difficult.

Then we moved onto writing a poem about being a young carer and how it feels.

The day was very emotional but I think it brought us all closer as a group.

Session 7 - Creative Writing with Daniela Nunnari

Today we welcome to the project a rising star in the Creative Writing world, Daniela Nunnari. Dani will be helping us to craft some creative narratives which can inspire or form part of the performances to be filmed.

Dani specialises in poetry and to start things off has created a piece based on the BLOG entries so far. She wanted to empathise what it was like to be a young carer without writing something that the crew felt was off the mark or misunderstanding. Therefore, she chose to write about Cat's exploding canvas which is one of the images which struck her most from the BLOG.

Each morning you hand me your heart.
You sigh with relief as I take it.
Released, you close your eyes to sleep.

I carry it all day.

Wrapped in a handkerchief I bought you for Christmas.

Session 6 - Changing from static to moving media

Session Aims:

Respond to poster drafts and complete final edits
Consider various film-making approaches and use them to develop my own ideas
Research existing films about young carers and discuss
Devise and present early ideas for film with clear aims and key messages

RARPA Statement :

“I can research & reflect on existing films about Young Carers and write a film pitch applying various story-telling techniques”

The group were asked to respond to the statement. The blue marks show how they felt at the start of the session, the orange show where they were by the end.

The YCR crew came back together at the City Screen Basement venue with the task of making the final edits for their campaign posters. They considered style, text and fonts, layout and the wording on the posters, making the necessary amendments for the designer to complete the job.

Following this, the group gathered together to look at some examples of existing films made about young carers. They were asked to consider what they liked and disliked about the films, and to listen for key messages. After each example they were asked to feedback on style, approach and content. The excersise was all about sparking their imagination and to help them start to visualise their ideas for their own film.

Once the crew had viewed the examples they set about working in teams to brainstorm ideas about their own film. As a guide they were asked to consider 1. Audience? (who is the film aimed at); 2. Impact (what Impact are you looking to make); 3. Key messages? (what are the key messages you want to communicate); 4. What does it look like? (what style and approach will you use, how will the film look!).

The crew got to work and started to be creative with ideas about how they could approach their film. Their commitment to the challenge in hand is always evident and it was no different with the brainstorming task. Behind the colorful characters of the YCR crew some really extraordinary experiences were starting to emerge; Stories of real struggle, difficult circumstances, immense pressure, stories of bravery, hope, overcoming challenges and the huge impact of the young carers service in their lives.

The YCR crew are a talented group with lots to say. Their experiences are really powerful and can really help to highlight the difficulties of being a young carer through their film, raising awareness, identifying hidden young carers and empowering people who work with young people to meet the needs of young carers more effectively.

today we looked at the photo-finished pieces of our different messages and how we could improve or change them.
we also watched some documentaries about young carers some were too simple and some were very hard-hitting. both were really good but could be better all ideas were good the simplest one if stretched out could of made more impact. all the camera angles really striked exactly were you wanted and brought a message to life.

Today we've looked at the final posters that the designers put together and deciding what we liked and disliked about them.

There was quite alot of feedback for the designers to look at and i hope that the eventual posters will look amazing.

We looked at examples of other films about young carers awhich were a bit difficult to watch. They gave us a good insight into the different types of film we can make and gave us alot to think about.

I can't wait to get started :)

Session 6 - Discussing Pre-Production & Media Interest

Young carers, firstly, the work you have created so far is really impressive. Outstanding effort! It will be exciting to see people's reactions when you launch the Young Carers Revolution along with all your media.

You are now moving quickly into the transition from static media to Moving Image. We call this part of the process 'pre-production' and you have some exciting workshops ahead to help you develop stories and ideas around the issue of young carers for a film production.

Pre-Production is all about developing your ideas and messages and creating imaginative ways of telling your story. It is also about planning the 'film shoot' so that we are prepared and have everything in place to make the film.

We have two very talented artists set up to work with you, one is a Writer and a Poet and one is a Theater Director and Performance Artist. The work you develop in these sessions will contribute to the direction of the final film and may form part of the content itself through poetry and performance.

Before you go on to make your own film, I have searched online for existing films about young carers for you to look at. These examples are a good starting point for you to consider what your message is, and should help you decide how you want to approach your own film. When watching them consider what you like and dislike about the content, style, pace and direction...

This one is crammed with statistics about young carers and is very informative. It addresses the 'hidden carers' issue and questions whether the needs of young carers are being met. It uses a combination of interviews, dramatized scenes and reconstructions.

Inspired Youth are really keen to see your work propelled into the wider media with the aim of getting your voices heard. We have already started to look at ways in which we could achieve this...

Ciara is really interested in the issue of Young Carers and is keen to find opportunities to write about your project. Ciara is interested in your stories about being young carers and wants to capture them using photographs and recordings of you talking about your experiences. Poster Drafts from Snowglobe

Following the design briefs set by the YCR crew, Gareth from Snowglobe Creative has been hard at work on the poster layouts, design concepts and text. Below are the first drafts as a work in progress. Gareth is very keen to hear feedback from the group before continuing to work on the the design, fonts and copy specified. We will spend some time on this in tonight's session.

Session 5 - Design Concepts @ City Screen Basement

Session Aims:

Introduce the work of Snowglobe Creative and a range of examples from their portfolio and other examples of famous campaign posters
Learn some advertising golden rules
Devise and present a series of design concepts for specific audiences

RARPA Statement :

“I can write a professional design brief using the golden rules of advertising”

The group were asked to respond to the statement; the black marks show how they felt at the start of the session and the... err... black marks show how they felt at the end. (It was an improvement honest...!)

The YCR crew met at the City Screen Basement venue to begin work on a campaign design brief. The brief is to be passed to Inspired Youth's favourite designer Snowglobe Creative. The task for the group was to turn the photos they had shot with Jim Poyner into a series of powerful campaign outputs for specific audiences.

First they viewed examples of Snowglobe's work and also looked through some significant social marketing poster campaigns from Barnardos and NSPCC amongst others; including some specifically designed around young carers issues.

Following this and using some key principles outlined in Pete Barry's book "The Advertising Concept Book - Think Now, Design Later" (Thames Hudson 2008). The group were introduced some Golden Rules of print advertising to apply to their concepts.

Posters are the quickest form of print advertising; keep it simple!
You have 3 seconds or 8 words to do the job with your strapline!

What response are you looking for in your audience?

You don't have to reveal all of your message, you can leave some gaps for the imagination!

The crew then worked in groups on the 5 photo concepts to devise a design brief for each. They selected their final photo file from those shortlisted in the last session and presented their ideas for strap lines, copy lines, style and mood to the rest of the group.

The presentations were made by projecting the chosen picture onto flipcharts and writing over the text to show each strapline and layout idea. The group then fed back on each concept.

It was a busy session and the ideas were strong. The briefs are now being prepared and sent to Snowglobe for their response. The next session will see the design drafts presented back to the group to make changes, edits and further suggestions before they are completed by Snowglobe.

Today was amazing. It was really good we all thought of ideas to but 8 words in 3 seconds was are aim and basicly my idea was that a diary starts off new then builds up and gets to boiling point then explodes and basicly then there young cares comes into hand and then there is some one to talk to and then there is the relife that it has all been takeing care of.

So yeaaa every one in the team is really good at listening and carnt wait till next time :):)

Todays session was all about designing our posters. the poster me Ashly and Emma were working on everyday life. it features a picture of a young carers diary that shows how busy there life is. lost in the pages is our title and our strap line was just another booked up day. i hope the poster makes people realise what its like being a young carer. our ideas have now gone off to a designer who will send back the completed posters for us to finish.

I am looking forward to seeing our final posters. i like eating muffins and i just spluttered muffin all over kev!!

Today was awsome we used the phototes to make deing brefs to send to a poaster speshelist. It was great fun the bit I liked the most was presenting what the poster was going to look like. The poster I was workin on had a slogin called 'One voice isn't enough get involved speak up'. I can't wait till the next session when we finalise the posters. I also can't wait until we start the end film because it will be cool filming some of it.

hi I'm Emily, I look after my brother Alec who is 15 and has autism. I work at Sainsburys and its naff! although I've just got a new job at my brothers school, applefields. I'm a calm quiet person although I do have a louder side! I think being part of carers revolution will help me to be more confidant when speaking infront of groups of people and getting to know others. I found today was quite busy and noisy but we did what we wanted to do and it was pretty good working in a small group. being part of this campaign is important to me as i am a carer, but i think we need to make people more aware of what we do on a daily basis and make our voice heard.

Hello i am a member of the young carers and am participating in the 'Young Carers Revolution' project

My name is Sebastian and i had my second full session of the project, which was very informative and i think, extremely useful, in projecting our young imagination into the campaign.

(there are some photo's of me on the blog if you are not quite sure of who i actually am!) =]

We have just had a successful session at the city screen basement, finalising our campaign posters and creating 'taglines' to accompany the photos that were taken the previous week.
The group of three which i was in, used one of the five concepts created before to help finish a poster design brief that can be sent to the graphic production facility, in order to make the finished product. The slogan was ''What's keeping you'' which referring to the idea of events taking place in a carers life, preventing them from protecting the person they care for. In this particular instance it was the juxtaposition of a boy at school being prevented from looking after his mum, due to being in a detention. Whilst there, at the very same time his mother falls very ill, yet he is unable to provide his aid as he it otherwise occupied with what seems trivial school work. We hope this creates an impacting image that hits the target audience, schools and places of education, with an clear message on the time constraints and the constant pressure playing n carers minds. We are waiting until the next session to see the finished product, which will allow us to make any last minutes changes if they are not quite what we had in mind.

today we came up with concepts with the pictures we shot last time. we went into groups and got one concept to develop and make into a poster that would catch peoples eye while getting over the message. the design concept we worked on was megaphone. this was to show that one voice is not enough and its takes people to get involved to make the campaign work. these ideas will be sent to a designer and we will see how he interprets our work.

i enjoyed today as it allowed me to finalise the concept and put my own ideas on paper. i also got to see the creativeness of everyone else and could form even more ideas from them and have a good time. ^^

Hey,
As always the session has has some great results, after the photoshoot with Jim Poyner on Saturday we saw some of the prototype pictures which we could select the final pictures. In our 5 groups we had to come up a caption that would relate and empahsise the purpose of the pictures. These pictures must effrect our target audience, I definitely think that that the pictures will have an impact upon the important people that are involved.
It's a lot harder than I thought to create a caption to a picture that you want to get a message across through, although I knew what I wanted to portray its hard to communicate it in words in order to make more people aware. Anyway I think everyone has done a great job :) :)

Well today was quick. Today we where finalizing the pictures and the layout for the posters. We got some good ideas put down. I cant wait to see what my poster idea finished. It was good seeing what ideas everyone came up with. The golden rules where helpful with starting the plan for the poster, and we where able to build on ideas straight away.

Now we have created a brief for a professional designer to hopefully fulfill our vision and make it real.

Today we've been looking at the final picture choices for our posters and deciding on strap lines.

We've looked at the advertising 'golden rules' to try and ensure our taglines are captivating and leave some information to the imagination.

After deciding on alot of different strap lines and quotes to go on the finished poster we went through each idea as a group and discussed what we felt worked best for each poster.

The clown idea of mine and Sami's was a difficult concept to create a strap line for. We didn't want to state the obvious but we didn't want it to be too complex that people didn't understand the message.

Today's been a difficult session and it's been really hard to come up with ideas that i liked. Although that could be because i'm ill.

I'm excited to see what the finished ideas look like :)

Session 4 - Photoshoot with Jim Poyner @ 41 Monkgate

Session Aims:

Review photo concepts and plan a photoshoot
Compose, direct, light and shoot the five scenarios
Review and discuss how images will be used in poster design

RARPA Statement :

“I can compose and capture a striking photo image using professional equipment”

The group were asked to respond to the statement. The green marks show where they felt at the start of the session and the blue show how they felt at the end.

The YCR Crew gathered again at 41 Monkgate for the photoshoot with Jim Poyner. The group began by reviewing the 5 concepts which had been shortlisted during the last session. A shoot schedule was decided and the props and set-ups discussed. To prepare for each scenario, the group took practice shots to work out the perfect angles and lighting set-ups. Jim then assisted the group in the roles of photographer, director, lighting assistants and models.

As an added bonus the YCR crew were joined during the shoot by a very special guest. Ahead of taking her place at the West End production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Professional Make-Up Artist Naomi Nye dropped in to work with the group to create the specialist make-up effects they required.

The results are outstanding with some high impact compositions in the bag! Oh... and as usual there were plenty of laughs along the way...!

Once the shoot was complete the group gathered to rate and select the best shots for each scenario from the different versions they shot.

With the final shots selected we look forward to the next session where we will be applying some advertising golden rules and turning the images into a series of campaign posters.

Today we have been working with a photographer - Jim. We were shooting pictures for our posters that we are making. One of the pictures was of a planner to show how busy our lives can be and it was my job to fill the planner and make it look good!

It was really good today I think it went really well. The pictures were amazing they showed proper circumstances and should get people thinking. Hopefully they will help people realize the reality of young carers lives.

At the end we looked at the pictures we had shot and chose as a group which ones we should keep for the designer.

I am looking forward to designing the posters next time!!

Hello pepols!!

Today we have been doing photography. The concepts were based on our ideas from last tuesday. We are trying to show the difficulties of being a young carer to get these messages across to the wider public we are developing some posters.

My idea was "winging it" which is all about acting on impulse and needing to sometimes make important decisions quickly. In the photo I show a carer trying to help his mum who has taken a turn for the worst and collapsed. I wanted people to see the stressful situations young carers can find themselves in and how they have to act on impulse and make important decisions, where other young people don't have those kinds of responsibilities.

I have found today fun. I had a make-up artist apply some menthol to my eyes which was quite painful but gave the effect of crying. Well I cried one tear but it was enough to do the job!!

I also got my hands on the professional cameras and took pictures of the process for the blog which I really enjoyed.

The photos came out good and i'm looking forward to making them in to real posters.

I am the best and you know it!!

Hi, I'm Tasha. Im 20 years old, and Im a full time carer at the moment. I have been caring for my mum for 9 years. I have been coming to young carers since i was 15. Being a young carer can be really difficult but you learn to live with it. Young carers really helps you to live with your situation and its great to be around other people in similar situations who have the same kinds of challenges. I find going a real release.

I love music and reading. I've really enjoyed the revolution so far, it's a great experience. Even though I had tea in my face today!! We have been working with Jim Poyner on a professional photo-shoot for a poster campaign. I played a mum who had collapsed while her son was at school and also a parent who had collapsed and was being tended to by her son. These ideas are trying to get across how much a parent can depend on a young carer to be there and the overwhelming responsibility that puts on a young person.

Today has been really good, i can see how the images could be developed into posters and I am looking forward to taking them forward into that stage.

Today was great we took lot's of shot's with a professional photographer called Jim. We took photos of different scenes for posters about young carers live.

My role today was taking professional shot's on a expensive camera and to pose in some of the photos. It was great fun my favorite bit was directing and shooting the photos. I'm looking forward to the next stage witch is making the photos into posters.

Hey bloggers,

I'm actually writing this dressed as a business woman as I'm posing for a picture. I think that I look quite official and it's being quite an impressive day. The outcome of some of the pictures is interesting and a lot better that I thought they would be. It's been really creative an it really shows the different perspectives of all the other young carers. It's always good to listen to other people :) the finished results are going to be amazing. The movement is really taking off just like we wanted!

Hi my name is Emma I'm 17 and I have been a young carer since I was 12. At the moment I am studying for my A-levels. My interests are trampolining and 'manga' drawing. It's sometimes difficult being a young carer as sometimes people don't understand the situation. Being the primary carer at home is quite stressful and sometimes I have limited time with my friends so the young carer group gives me somewhere to relax and be myself.

Today I have come down to the young carers revolution project for the first time and we were doing a photo shoot for a poster campaign about young carers. Everyone was welcoming and explained what the ideas and scenes that were to be set up were about. I enjoyed helping out and demonstrating my ideas through different poses for the clown shot and got a few scary pictures! I also posed as an angel and manged to hold the wings on myself although it was a compromising position (hopefully not a photo for facebook)!

i think that the photo shoot campaign is a good idea as it raises awareness of the hidden side to caring in an original way thought out by young carers themselves. I think I will come back and get more involved and hopefully be in more of the pictures.
